his mouth until

it turned

into a cave,

so all of us

who were there

by choice

(and our children

too) could hear

each other’s voices

inside him: hesitant,

sorrowful,

diminishing.

TWO SURGEONS

It was a snowy night in March.

I had little to do.

So I signed myself

into the ER,

took a penknife from my jacket

pocket, and cut into the chest

of a sweet old man

who was clutching his heart

in the sweaty leather chair next to mine.

Two surgeons, hearing

the man’s inhuman cries,

pushed aside a pack of nurses,

vaulted over a counter,

and knelt beside me

to hold open my incisions.
